Coca-Cola HBC Austria & LKW WALTER launch e-truck

Coca-Cola HBC Austria and LKW WALTER are setting a joint sustainable milestone with the use of the first e-truck for product transportation. By switching from diesel to electric drive, around 29,500 kg CO2 emissions* could be avoided on the 24,500 kilometres driven so far.

The domestic beverage manufacturer Coca-Cola HBC Austria and the leading transport service provider LKW WALTER are not only linked by a long-standing successful partnership, but also by their efforts to make logistics processes more sustainable. “We have always pursued the most efficient and direct route planning possible,” explains Michael Krainthaler, CEO of LKW WALTER. “Together, we are now taking a further step towards reducing our transport emissions.” Since spring 2024, the first joint e-truck has been in operation on defined routes between the local production centre of Coca-Cola HBC Austria in Edelstal, Burgenland, and central warehouses of customers in eastern Austria.

This makes Coca-Cola's products even more climate-friendly on the road, as Felix Sprenger, Supply Chain Director of Coca-Cola HBC Austria, explains: “So far, we have been able to avoid 29,500 kg CO2* on 24,500 kilometres driven by switching from diesel to electric drive. For 2025, we expect a total saving of around 95 tons of CO2.” With eye-catching co-branding, the commitment to more environmentally friendly goods routes is also made visible directly on the trailer for the first time.

The entire industry, including our customers, must be prepared to play an active role in shaping the transition to CO2 neutrality.

Logistics as the key to reducing emissions

For Coca-Cola HBC Austria, the latest project fits seamlessly into the global sustainability strategy. In addition to energy-efficient production and beverage cooling as well as a circular packaging mix, the focus of the reduction measures is on logistics. “We have been gradually converting our own vehicle fleet to electric drives since 2021,” explains Felix Sprenger. The products themselves are transported by logistics partners.

“In order to reduce our indirect emissions in this area, we therefore need cross-company and cross-sector strategies and solutions that harmonize sustainability, innovation and efficiency.” While the partnership with LKW WALTER is a prime example of the use of alternative drive systems in HGV freight transport, the company has been relying on climate-friendly rail transport for the transportation of its beverages to the west for several years. Wherever possible, trucks are only used for the “first” and “last mile”.

Pioneer of the green transformation

LKW WALTER is not only a pioneer in combined transport, but is also intensively committed to alternative drives and fuels as part of the green transformation. Today, the company already handles a third of its transports in an environmentally friendly manner by cleverly combining truck, rail and ship. In the future, the development of so-called green corridors is to be driven forward, which rely on alternative fuels such as HVO100 and low-emission drive technologies such as BEVs. More than 329,000 tons of CO2 are already being saved every year - a significant step towards green logistics.

The corporate strategy 2030 aims to further increase the transport volume in combined transport and reduce the proportion of empty kilometres. Michael Krainthaler emphasizes the importance of joint efforts: “The entire industry, including our customers, must be prepared to actively shape the change towards CO2 neutrality. The partnership with Coca-Cola HBC Austria is an important step for us on this path.”
