Combined transport montage - ferry and moving train

Combined Transport - Sustainable & Flexible

Since the beginning of the eighties LKW WALTER has been developing intermodal transport solutions, which, in addition to environmentally-oriented added value, also offer significant advantages. To achieve this, we shift conventional road transports to rail and sea, and thus contribute to a significant reduction in pollutant emissions.

A third of all our transports are already carried out using Combined Transport - as a result, we achieved a CO₂ reduction of 341,501 tonnes in 2024. By switching to alternative modes of transport, we also relieve the European road network and contribute to less noise pollution and greater road safety. And it's not just the environment that benefits: by shifting from road to rail, more than 12,000 kilometres of traffic jams have also been avoided.
Between 2019 and 2024, more than 3.3 million transports were shifted from road to environmentally-friendly Combined Transport solutions. This is equivalent to approx. 3.23 billion kilometres, which were handled by rail or ship instead of road. This saved around 1.85 million tonnes of CO₂. By using alternative fuels and drives in the feeder services - with the aim of building a Europe-wide network of Green Corridors - we are making Combined Transport even more climate-friendly.

All 15,000+ of our cranable trailers are equipped with a telematics system.

Higher payload

Reduce your loading and unloading processes and thus your costs.

High flexibility

Our stand trailer system lets you decide when you load and unload.

Sustainable

You reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 90 percent compared to road transport.

Social responsibility

Fewer trucks on long haul routes relieve drivers and increase road safety.

Further development and strengthening of Combined Transport

As a pioneer and one of the largest players in Combined Transport in Europe, LKW WALTER has been making an essential contribution to reducing pollutant loads in transport for more than four decades. We are consistently continuing on this path. The focus here is both on the use and expansion of new train and ship connections, as well as increasing the frequency on existing connections.

With more than 300 daily departures on more than 250 Short Sea and Rail routes in Combined Transport, LKW WALTER links all the important European business centres.

The continuous expansion of our Europe-wide Combined Transport network is one of LKW WALTER's strategic goals. We want to push this forward wherever the infrastructural and commercial requirements allow it and where there is sufficient loading potential for the development of new Combined Transport routes.

Strong partnerships

In order for Combined Transport to deliver the best possible results for our customers, close cooperation with partners such as container terminals and railway companies is important. Whether Verona, Vienna, Herne or other important hubs in our network: Partnership-based cooperation is the creed of our work so that we can achieve the goal of connecting every country in Europe with each other. Our cooperation with the Container Terminal Herne shows what such a partnership looks like.
